한국 최초의 밀리언셀러 인간시장으로 이름을 알린 문학 거장 김홍신(78)이 21년 만에 시집 그냥살자를 펴내며 141번째 작품을 세상에 내놓았다.

 

2026년, 팔순과 작가 데뷔 50주년을 앞둔 이 시점에서, APP저널은 그의 끊임없는 창작 열정과 한국 문학에 남긴 족적을 조명한다.

64편의 시가 담긴 이 시집은 삶의 무게를 고민하는 독자들에게 김홍신 특유의 관조적 시선으로 조언을 건네는 작품들로 채워졌다. 특히, 정치권을 날카롭게 비판하는 시 ‘오장 칠부 달린 무리’는 시국에 대한 그의 고민을 담아 눈길을 끈다. 국회의원을 지낸 그는 “정치적 주제를 넣고 싶지 않았지만, 시국을 생각해 한 편 포함했다”고 전했다.

Published after a 21-year hiatus from poetry, this release is a meditative gift to readers, arriving just as Kim approaches his 80th year and the 50th anniversary of his literary debut in 2026. For APP Journal, this milestone offers a moment to reflect on a writer whose boundless creativity continues to shape Korean literature with grace and gravitas.

 

At 78, Kim remains a tireless creator, weaving narratives that resonate across generations. In a recent interview at his book-filled, 41-year residence in Seoul’s Seocho-gu, he shared, “Next year, I turn 80, and it will mark 50 years as a writer. My goal is to publish 150 books before I leave this world.” Let’s Just Live, his 141st work, is a testament to that ambition—a collection of 64 poems that distill a lifetime of observation into verses of quiet wisdom and sharp insight. The collection, published under the auspices of the Hongsang Culture Foundation, also coincides with the foundation’s 10th anniversary, a milestone Kim plans to celebrate with a grand event at the Kim Hongsin Literature Museum in 2026.

 

Kim’s return to poetry after two decades is a poignant departure from his celebrated novels, such as The Human Market, which captivated readers in the 1980s, and his recent foray into children’s literature with If It Ends, I’ll Go to the Future (2025). The poet’s voice in Let’s Just Live is both contemplative and candid, offering readers a lens into life’s complexities through his signature introspective gaze. Among the collection’s standout works is “The Crowd with Five Viscera and Seven Passions,” a poem that critiques the political sphere with a sharpness honed by Kim’s own experience as a former National Assembly member. “I hesitated to include political themes,” he admitted, “but the state of affairs compelled me to add just one.”

 

Kim’s literary journey is as expansive as it is inspiring. Born in 1947 in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province, he holds a bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate in Korean literature from Konkuk University, where he also serves as a distinguished professor. His accolades include the 12th Korea Novel Literature Award, the 6th Novel Literature Award, and the 4th National Conference for Unification Culture Award. Beyond writing, Kim has served as a National Assembly member for two terms, chairs the Hongsang Culture Foundation, and sits on the board of the Cultural Heritage National Trust. His contributions to Korean culture are as multifaceted as the genres he explores.

 

Currently, Kim is revising his earlier novel Nan Jang Pan for re-serialization in Monthly Literature World while crafting a new full-length novel.
